WHAT IS PLAY THERAPY?

Toys are children's words and play is their language- G. Landreth

Often it is hard to find the words to communicate experiences directly; play provides an effective medium of communication for a child. The playroom is a safe space for a child to freely express their emotions and feelings without having to “talk” directly about what is going on. This is done through the use of art, sand, clay, puppets, music, among others.

Play Therapy is based on the therapeutic relationship built between child and therapist. The therapist is specially trained to recognize reoccurring patterns and themes in play and reflect the emotional content in the child’s expression. The sessions are mainly non-directive where the child takes the lead and the therapist follows, there are very few rules other than those around safety.
